Sophie Koh

Biography

I am a rising senior at Amherst College, majoring in Physics and Computer Science. After Amherst, I plan to apply to PhD programs in electrical engineering. I've been involved in Spectra, Amherst's Physics and Astronomy Club, and I am co-president of Amherst's Electronics Club. I'm really passionate about increasing diversity in Physics, and have been working in Amherst's faculty-student committee to improve the climate and community of Amherst's Physics and Astronomy department. In a research capacity, I work with Professor David Hall implementing machine learning to optimize Bose-Einstein condensates and their detection. I plan to continue this research with my summer internship at NIST Gaithersburg studying machine learning algorithms to detect topological excitations in Bose-Einstein condensates. Outside of physics, I love to dance in DASAC, Amherst's hip-hop dance club, and I play the baritone saxophone in the jazz ensemble!
