Hi, my name is Justin Andre L. Avendano, you can call me Justin for short. This week I started my job as the Society of Rheology/Soft Matter Kitchen Intern for the summer over at AIP.
This week has been a whirlwind of new experiences. After moving in on Sunday with the help of my awesome parents, I started meeting many of the other interns. From the beginning, everyone was really friendly and open. On Monday, many of us went to a Memorial Day parade, which was great fun.
I am writing this only a few hours after having come to Washington D.C. and the George Washington campus, with most of my belongings still in my luggage.
The Honda went through the gamut the week before I drove to Washington. To make sure everything was as it should be, I replaced the car's tires, poured in fresh oil, and asked the mechanics for a fine look-over.
Our first week in DC has concluded in an astonishingly short amount of time - although this isn't truly my first week in DC. I grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, and went to college in College Park, Maryland, so DC has alwasy been seemingly (and nearly literally) around the corner.
The first week of a ten-week journey is now completed and I am already realizing that the summer will be gone in the blink of an eye. On Saturday I drove from my home state of Tennessee to my cousins’ house in northern Virginia.
This week I moved to a city I’ve never been to on the exact opposite side of the country from where I grew up (Seattle) with only one suitcase and a backpack to be the Education and Diversity Statistics Intern for the American Physical Society (APS).
Hello everyone! The SPS 2021 Internship program has finally come to a close. I had such an amazing summer, and I am so proud of all the wonderful work the interns accomplished.
